Why I'm Running

My young sons, five and one, are the seventh generation of my family from California. Arriving in 1856, we’ve worked everywhere from California’s agricultural farmlands to Silicon Valley to Hollywood. We’ve been small business owners and nurses, farm workers and bookkeepers, public servants and newspaper publishers. We’ve had front row seats to the rise of the most extraordinary economic engine in the world, and a bastion of innovation in industry and policy.

I want my kids to enjoy that same Golden State freedom and prosperity.

Unfortunately, for all its economic strength, California under Democratic dominance for decades ranks:

  • 43rd in long-term fiscal stability
  • 36th in access to healthcare
  • 22nd in healthcare affordability
  • 28th in preschool enrollment
  • 44th in K-12 education
  • 29th most expensive for college
  • 47th in income inequality, with the highest poverty rate in America
  • 48th in cost-of-living…
  • …and dead freaking last in quality of life.

The Democratic Party’s lock on governance in California has failed to help the state break some of its longest-running challenges. Single party rule with a 3/4 legislative majority means the party’s left most wing won’t even need votes from their own moderates—let alone Republicans.

They can pass whatever they want, whenever they want to.

We can do better.

For more than a century, the California Republican Party was a powerhouse that helped ensure the state DID do better.

We need to do it again, but our party is broken after decades of bad decisions, new election laws, and a changing California electorate the party has done little to represent.

None of us are blind to the nuclear winter in which we now find ourselves.

It is time to roll up our sleeves and solve problems.

To rebuild the party.

To refocus on the realities of the California electorate’s priorities.

To re-earn the trust of those California voters who feel alienated.

Those who know me know how deeply I treasure the big tent Ronald Reagan championed. I do not seek to be a leader amongst only those who agree with me. It is critical we assemble a broad board filled with new energy, faces, ideas.

A board representative of the diversity of views, ages, and demographics from across our party.

A board that will hone a laser-focus on new demographic engagement, messaging, and growth, starting at the local level, on up.

Professionally, I work in cybersecurity. But the single greatest honor of my life, aside from being a father, husband, and American, has been to serve in uniform—an absolute privilege I’m still grateful to do today as a reserve officer. I’ve served for more than 15 years, including nearly 7 mobilized to disaster response and intelligence missions around the world. For the past four years, I was mobilized in the US Intelligence Community as 2nd in command of a large cyber intelligence detachment based in San Diego and the Bay Area.

I’ve spent my entire adult life as a Republican. After 9/11 inspired my shift from high-tech to public service, most of my time was spent straddling work in the military, public policy, and politics:

  • In the mid-2000s, I ran Lead21, then the fastest growing Republican-leaning political organization in years -- growing membership 802% even in deep blue San Francisco.
  • I have a track record building strong volunteer and membership programs raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for advocacy, candidates, and policy initiatives.
  • I’ve worked closely with county central committees, as a parliamentarian, communications strategist, and in local candidate recruitment and fundraising.
  • Between nonprofit/charitable and political fundraising, I’ve helped raise millions.
  • My professional work in policy and advocacy has focused on security, education, and economic prosperity.
  • A delegate to the state committee since 2006, I’ve also been honored to serve on the Platform, Platform Drafting, and Veterans committees.
